Students begin the art activity with research on a number of cities in both the United States and Canada. Students should watch and take notes on the Expedia City Guides on some major cities. I suggest watching the videos more than once to catch all of the fast-paced information. Be ready to complete a paragraph, based on these notes, then create art in groups. As their final research assignment, students complete the Chapter 6 Assessment on the Human Geography of the United States. Students should read carefully, write the questions and complete all sections (except the Geo Activity). Be sure to ask questions for clarification prior to the test!
Students continue to work on their PBL by researching cities that fit all of their group members' ideas of "beauty". Groups should narrow their most beautiful cities down to just one Canadian city and on American city. Groups should find a number of sources to justify each selection, including a YouTube video, a quote, a primary source article, and the skyline of each. refer to the PBL Outline for details of the entire project. *Remember, cite your sources according to MLA format (Purdue Owl)

Students continue the research portion of their PBL by matching their definition of "beauty" with an American or Canadian city. The should find at least on source they can use to support their claim. They are also expected to cite the electronic source in correct MLA format.
Prior to students embarking on their own version of a Project-based learning (PBL) assignment, students read an article to touts many of the positive benefits of adopting PBL in classrooms. Students have been encouraged to always envision the other side of the argument. Their assignment is to create a list of possible cons or negative aspects of PBL. They will need to explain, in detail, each of the items on their list.
Students continue their research on the United States by reading the section about the different regions of the United States. Students should read, outline, then complete #1-3 in the Section Assessment on page 149.
