Points Possible: 50 EC Due Date: 12/23 (with travel journal) As an addition to the Latin America Travel Journal, students are encouraged to create an accurate budget for their dream vacation. Students should have a rough estimate (Day 3) of their trip, but this assignment requires a precise log of all expenditures while on the trip. The major costs of travel, hotels, and food are important, but they are often times, not the only major costs for a trip. Think about emergencies, gifts, tips...that may add to the total costs! Use the attached Excel template to log the costs accurately.
Due Date: 10/21/16 Points Possible: 30 EC pts. After completing a few days of research on some of the world's religions, students have a chance to further their curiosity and earn extra credit by completing a religious (picture or word) collage. I have attached information gathered from an online blog. Your job is to read, research, fact check, then create a collage complete with symbolism from at least four (4) major religions. You can print, cut, then paste on a poster with a minimum size of 36" x 36 " (if you have a realistic vision of your project, and can convince me, I will provide you with the poster paper.)
Due Date: Friday 10/14 Points Possible: 20 pts. EC Students have researched some of the natural disasters on Earth and the human-environment interaction that results. Recently, we talked about Hurricane Matthew hitting the East Coast of the United States and Typhoon Megi affecting Taiwan and China. This assignment is intended to give students further insight into the topic of Hurricanes. Students should read the information sections, then complete the worksheets that follow. Assignment should be completed, in its entirety, and turned in by October 14th.
Due date: Presentations will be conducted Monday 10/3. Points Possible: 10 Extra Credit Students have a chance to earn extra credit by giving a short presentation about a landform. Students should ask for a landform informational page from the teacher, color the landform, then be ready to present their efforts to the class. This activity gives students a chance to practice public speaking in a low anxiety format (presentations should last no more than 20 seconds) An example is attached.
Due Date: 9/30 Points Possible: 20 points (EC) After watching the film, Planet Earth: Pole to Pole, students should have an understanding of the impact of the sun depending on the latitude on Earth. Students should have completed a fill-in-the-blank worksheet during the viewing of the film. I suggest writing your answers on a separate paper, as explanations of each response are required!
Due Date: 9/16
Points Possible: 20 pts. EC Students have been analyzing maps and practicing using latitude and longitude. This assignment is meant to show the difficult task of taking 3-d objects and turning them into flat, 2-d maps. Cartographers, or map makers, understand that no matter how you attempt this assignment, there is a possibility for distortion Instructions and overview: “Peeling the Earth” To receive points for the activity, you will need to document each stage. Take pictures or video of each of the stages listed below and turn it in to the instructor/teacher. 1. Each student starts with a washed and dried (very important) orange and a permanent marker (and a paper towel). Draw a cute picture on their orange (use a globe to copy). Make a prediction of what your picture will look like when it is smashed down to a 2-D object. 2. Allow the ink to dry. 3. Once the ink is dry, carefully peel their orange. Try as much as possible to have the fewest number of pieces of peel when you are done. Place the peeled orange on a paper towel. Leave it aside to eat later. Note that the ink does rub off easily – do your best to keep the ink on the orange and not on their hands. 4. The goal is to take the peel and lay it flat on a second paper towel. Draw what your flat picture looks like. With a contrasting color pen or marker, fill in the lines so there are no gaps in the picture. 5. Compare and contrast your starting picture to the ending picture. Go back and see how distorted your “predicted” picture looks compared to your ending picture. Are there parts of the orange where the distortion is greater or less? For example, is there more distortion at the top or bottom than around the middle (or vice-versa)? |
